Greetings ~

If you've seen my other blogs about DIY projects, you know that I have built several kitchen cabinets from Ginny's mail-order company for my wife. In all, they have been fun and easy to do. However, this one was not fun at all.

Other Ginny's cabinets that I have built.

Now, don't get me wrong, the cabinet was okay to build and it went together fine, but the instructions are misleading in places and parts will have to be re-done if they are followed in the order that the instructions are read.

Like I said before, I have built several Ginny's cabinets and all have been fine. It's only that this one was somewhat of a problem. So if you decide to build it, and you come across this blog, maybe I can help you. Let's get started.

There's no sense to do it in the basement shop and have to try to get it upstairs after it's done.

Make sure everything is there.

There should be three small boxes of hardware. Screws, dowel pins, etc.

Also two long boxes with the drawer slides in them.

There should be eight drawer slides: four for the two drawers and four for the cabinet interior.

I have an electric drill fitted with a Phillip's Head screw driver bit, straight head screwdriver, Phillip's Head screwdriver, light duty hammer, box knife and a bottle of wood glue.

When installing the wooden dowel pins, they do fit pretty snug. However, I choose to use a dab of wood glue on them anyway. It will simply keep t he cabinet more solid and stable in the long run. Plus you don't want parts coming loose after awhile.

These screw-in fasteners I have used on all of the Ginny's cabinets and I like them. Then go in easy and really hold tight and solid.

You can screw them in with the drill.

The screw sticks out halfway.

The other piece is pressed into it's located holes using your finger.

Just press it in with your finger until it's flush with the wood panel's surface.

It should be lined up with the hole on the edge.

Once you put the other panel in place and line the screw with the plug, use a Phillip's screwdriver to turn the plug and watch the gap between the two panels tighten up. It makes a solid and tight joint.

The metal drawer slides actually go on pretty easy. There are eight of the them: four for the cabinet interior and four for the drawers. Just follow the instructions.

Now the two plastic backstops are put in to stop the doors when closed. These can be tapped into the holes with the small hammer.

Let's get the basic cabinet framing done. To do this just follow the instructions. This part is easy to do..

The Top ~

To install the top, you'll be again using the two-piece screw and turn buckel system. They should work fine.

All the screws are underneath the cabinet's top.

Okay! The top is on and locked into place.

The Back Panel ~

The back panel has to go one now.

The instructions shows no tack nails up the center. But you have to nail the center of the back panel. I used four nails up eack side and four nails on both the top and bottom. That left me nails to go four up the center.

Now the door hinges and knobs are put on.

They did short me four screws for the hinges. As long as you have other screws that works, you'll be okay. But they have to be thick and really short as not to go through the side walls.

I did have screws that worked. So we managed to get it done.

The Drawers ~

The drawers, which I figured would be the most difficult part of the whole thing to do, actually was the easiest. It went so well and so fast that i didn't even think about taking pictures. It went that well and took about six minutes to build both drawers.

The shelves just slide in and sit on their supports.

Overall, the cabinet turned out pretty good.

The wife loves it. She is using old tissue boxes with the tops removed for dividers in the drawers and they fit perfectly.

The lower section is roomy and holds a lot of stuff. The shelves are adjustable too.

The picture in the Ginny's catalog shows the cabinet with a cheap, thin ugly top. Thankfully, the actual cabinet comes with a much nicer, thicker and smoother top in a maple finish.

Overall Review ~

The Ginny's Katie Sideboard cabinet was a project that i put on a scale of six out of ten. There were four screws missing but otherwise was complete. Construction had it's easy parts and not so easy parts. It should take you a full day to put together. Maybe two days if you get frustrated. But once it's finished, it is a nice little cabinet and is very functional. So I'm glad the wife got it. However, Iwould have rather they had put other, more standard hinges on t he doors. The hinges included are of a locking type that are too tight when opening and must be hand guided when closed or they will slam. Other that that, not a bad build at all. If you get one, good luck!
